Getting Around Yerevan

Yerevan's city center is compact enough to walk between most sights. But the broader metro area is served by a combination of the Yerevan Metro, a network of marshrutkas (shared minibuses), and taxis. The metro runs a single line and is reliable, inexpensive, and air-conditioned, useful for crossing the city quickly, though its coverage is limited to a corridor rather than the full urban area. Marshrutkas fill the gaps extensively, running frequent routes throughout the day across virtually every neighborhood. But they can be crowded and routes are not always obvious to first-time visitors without local knowledge or a Armenian-language map. For on-demand travel, ride-hailing apps are the practical choice. GG is the dominant local platform and is generally the recommended option over hailing street taxis, where pricing can be opaque for visitors. Yandex Taxi also operates in Yerevan. Both apps show the fare upfront and eliminate negotiation, the standard advice for any visitor is to use an app rather than accepting an unmarked cab at tourist sites. From Zvartnots International Airport, the most practical options are a pre-booked taxi or an app-based ride into the center, check current rates in the booking widget, as airport-to-center fares vary. There is also bus service connecting the airport to the city, which is the budget option. Avoid accepting unsolicited offers from drivers inside the arrivals hall. Walking to the official taxi rank or simply opening GG before you clear customs will save you the tourist premium.

Quick Transportation Tips

Download the GG app before arrival, it's Yerevan's dominant ride-hailing service and has a far more transparent experience than negotiating with unmetered street taxis.

The Yerevan Metro is a fast, affordable way to navigate the city center. But service typically winds down in the late evening, so plan your return accordingly.

Numbered marshrutkas (minibuses) cover neighborhoods and routes the single metro line doesn't reach, signal your stop to the driver as you board so they know where to let you off.

Street taxis without meters are common near tourist areas, so always agree on a fare before you get in, or simply use GG to skip the negotiation entirely.
